At the Ordinary Meeting on Wednesday 21 August, Council made the decision to close the Laidley Saleyards by 30 June 2025. The cattle dip was likely to be decommissioned by the end of February 2025, and decommissioning and remediation of the saleyards site will occur following the full closure.
This decision was made following investigations and deliberation of environmental, financial and safety considerations which included the engagement of independent external specialists. The cost of addressing the range of matters identified has been estimated to be more than $2 million.
At the Ordinary Council Meeting on Wednesday 16 October, Council amended the previous resolution to effectively remove the closure dates and formalise a Working Group to explore the range of issues and possible options that might make the saleyards viable to upgrade and operate under various management models.
Council recognises the 50-year operation of the Laidley Saleyards and the impact that its closure may have on local cattle producers and is committed to working with stakeholders.
Laidley Saleyards Working Group
Expressions of interest from local cattle producers to join a Laidley Saleyards Working Group (LSWG) closed on Sunday, 20 October 2024. The call out came in response to community concerns and feedback about Council’s recent decision to close the Laidley Saleyards.
Following Council’s announcement of its decision last month, Council has met with a range of stakeholders to investigate solutions that could potentially see a saleyard continue to operate sustainably within the region.
The LSWG has been established to discuss and explore a range of potential options to support the local cattle industry in response to the significant compliance issues identified at the site. Please see the Document Library on this project page for more information about the LSWG.
